How do you cook bulgar?

Last time we tried to cook bulgar, it burned. What ratio of water to bulgar should I use? How long do I need to cook it? How often does it need to be stirred?

Do you have a microwave? That's easiest, I believe. It's 2 to 1, water/broth to bulgar.


I put 4 cups of boiling water (with a bouillion cube) into an 8 cup Pyrex glass measuring cup. I add 2 cups of rinsed bulgar and cook on "high" for 15-20 minutes. At the end of the time, I "fluff" it and let it sit for 5 minutes and serve.


There is no need to "stir" the bulgar in the microwave. It roils and boils the entire time and does not burn.


You can substitute a can of chopped tomatoes/chilies or salsa for part of the water to make "Mexican Bulgar".


If you want to use the bulgar as cereal, or want to sweeten it, just use water rather than broth to cook the bulgar.
