Ginaki 0 Posted November 9, 2006 I think this may have been around before, but I always find math teasers fun.      YOUR AGE BY DINER & RESTAURANT MATH  This I s pretty neat.  DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST! It takes less than a minute. Work this out as you read ... Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out! This is not one of those waste of time things, it's fun.  1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to go out to eat. (more than once but less than 10)  2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)  3. Add 5  4. Multiply it by 50  5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1756 .... If you haven't, add 1755.  6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.   You should have a three digit number   The first digit of this was your original number (I.e., how! Many times you want to go out to restaurants in a week.)  The next two numbers are  YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it is!!!!!) THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2006) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND WHILE IT LASTS Lifetimer since April 2001 195/135/150WW

lismith 0 Posted November 10, 2006 I have seen this before and it has also been done with how many chocolates you like to eat in a week. It is cool how it works. Being a Math education major I figured out the math behind it. You can easily be adapted to make it work for 2007. Sparkplug 10 Posted November 11, 2006 That was weird. Being a business major, I have no understanding of the math behind it. But I really want to know why/how it works. Laura, do you think you can explain it in layman's terms? Kristen  Lifetime Member working to get back to goal: 0 lbs down / 28.4 lbs more to lose

lismith 0 Posted November 11, 2006 That was weird. Being a business major, I have no understanding of the math behind it. But I really want to know why/how it works. Laura, do you think you can explain it in layman's terms?I will do my best to explain it to you. I will show the math but I do explain what I am doing. Don't let the math scare you. 1. Step on is to pick a number more than once but less than 10. It has to be less than 10 or it would give you a four digit number in the end.  So the number you picked we will call x  2. Step two says to multiply by 2  So we now have 2x  3. Step 3 says to add 5  So we now have 2x +5  4. Step 4 says to multiply by 50. So I mulitply each term by 50 and  we now have 100x + 250 The 100x is the reason for less than 10  5. is to subtract the year of your birth. so we will call this y so we now have 100x + (250 -y)  6. In this step we are to add 1756 if you have had your birthday and 1755 if not. So lets look at both. You combine like terms so you will be adding it to 250 So if you have add your birthday you get  100x + (2006-y) If you have not had your birthday you get 100x + (2005-y) As you can see with y being your birth year 2006 or 2005 minus your birth year will give you your age.  Now with 100x will give you a 3 digit number of 200,300,400 ect so with the last two digits being zeros then when you add your age it will be the last two digits. The first digit will be the number you picked since anything multiplied by 1 is the orginal number.   So to make it work for 2007 in the last step you would add 1757 if you have had your birthday and 1756 if you have not.
