to cook or not to cook oats

kind of a stupid question but this is coming from a guy: do oats really need to be cooked ?

 

it seems like a human thing to do meaning we don't cook oats for horses why do we need to cook oats for humans ?

Well, there are some recipes for overnight oats that don't need to be cooked, but they have liquid that they absorb in the fridge overnight. But yeah. Generally you have to cook them. Believe me, they taste a whole lot better that way. They're easy to do in the microwave. I put 1/2 cup of large flake oats in a bowl, add 1 cup of milk (you can use water if you prefer) and cook 'em for 4 minutes. Let them sit for a bit before you eat them.

A WW. friend buys a huge bag of oats in the grocery store. She brought me some, along with the recipe for cooking them. These are not flakes. They look more like seeds of grain.

 

Fill large pot with water. Put in 1 or 2 cups of oats.

Bring to a boil. Turn down from high heat and simmer, stir occasionally

After 45 mins., rinse oats in colander

They are ready to eat.

Let remainder dry for a few hours, stirring occasionally.

Put in fridge.

She eats 4 tbsps. in a bowl with milk and microwaves them for 2 mins. Then she adds ground flax seeds, and whatever type of frozen berries or fresh ones that you like.

 

I'm going to try them soon.

WWguy- I have to say I am rolling on the floor, that recipe looked a bit challenging to me especially the part about using 2 cups of oats, those things swell up and well, you might have enough to feed a horse.

Kudos to you for doing this, you are doing great. Hang in there, learning to cook healthy is something that will help you every step of the way, and you do know you can buy instant oatmeal, I keep the Quaker weight control in my desk at work to stave off a run to the vending machine.

Hello:

 

Well, my friend cooks enough oats at once to do her and DH for the week and maybe longer. I didn't go into the details as to how much they eat of it at once. They eat it every day! Also, it's not a "glob" of oats if you stir it as it's cooking. You put it in a colander to rinse.

 

I use a strainer as I only cook about 1/2 cup at once for myself.

 

Seems pretty easy to me.

 

Of course, you can buy the individual pkgs. if you want.

 

Oh well, to each his own.

I just had cream of wheat. 3T and water, microwave 2.5 minutes stirring midway. Thats good and its simply filling food. I added blueberries

Great hints ladies.

 

Grocery shopping today 2 buy some frozen blue berries and other frozen fruits including in season fresh fruits as well as cream of wheat ( first time for the cream of wheat since the days my mom made it for me ) .

 

Still don't get the idea of " straining " cooked oats. What is it that i am supposed to strain out ?

 

Had a good laugh at the idea of cooking a weeks worth of oats. Seems somewhat odd. You would have to refrigerate and then re-heat to eat. Why not just cook a daily fresh batch. But then what do i know being a pretend chief here .

I have started to experiment with eating savoury oatmeal for breakfast. I cook it in stock, add whatever spices I am in the mood for, curry, or something like that. Then I top it with chickpeas and a fried egg. I am loving it. Google savoury oatmeal breakfasts. There are tons of great options. On Pinterest too.

I think the oats she is referring to that says rinse are the steel cuts oats. She said they look more like grains and that's what the steel cut ones are not been flattened like the old fashioned kind or grinded up like the instant each time it is considered more processed and may lose some of the nutritional value. just some thoughts google to find out more.


I can do this with the strength Christ gives me!!

IDK if they need to be cooked at all really, not even "cooked up" with absorbed liquid as in overnight oats.

Think Muesli the Swiss cereal...pretty sure those oats are raw. I used to live on yogurt drenched with that stuff.

my doctor has suggested due to my obesity that my carb intake be low and my protein intake be high .

 

are oats high or low in carbs ?

You just need to pour hot water then add some fruits and it is ready to eat.

That certainly is simple to do .
